The JV1 - My first router
picture
I call my the first router mahcihe as JV1 (Jyrsin V1). It was an attempt to create CNC router capable of milling circuit boards and some other soft materials.

The contruction was simple - no much detailed CAD-work needed. The first image shows my original plan but I ended up constructing it differently when I realizer I'll get more working area if I swith the top and middle moving layers.

Linear guides

As linear motion guides I used some ball slides that were meant to be used in drawers. I had to modify it little bit to make it move in two ways. The slides are quite rigid in sideways direction but are bent down if pushed from top. I solved this by placing small rolling "needles" in space between slide and table for upper layer and PTFE spacers for bottom layer. That solution seems to work well.

In Z axis I used four parallel 8 mm round shafts with eight linear ball bushes.

Construction

The construction started in winter 2003. I used 20 mm plywood as basis of router.
Finished

Here is the JV1 in finished state. It works surprisingly well for such simple machine. Plywood wasn't straight enough for BCP milling so I had to mill a flat area in the middle of top layer. The working area is about 25x25 cm.
Results

Some test millings I've done with JV1. I didn't use it for many practical works before I started building JV2 that should be capable of milling light metals like aluminium.
